EXPOSURE
This issue, to continue our Exposure series, we showcase the work of Clive Gould of Offshore Sculptures.
What is your background?
I was employed by BBC Wales
television for 24 years as Head of
Graphic Design which has had a
great influence throughout my
current work. My paintings are
created with considerable detail, and
similarly with my sculptures which
have been developed to achieve total
realism and also the desire to touch!
What inspires your work?
I am fascinated by the sea and it’s
magical coastline. I started by
producing a series of paintings taken
from my own photographic reference
of interesting formations of rocks and
pebbles. This led to my concept of
actually handcrafting my own rocks
and pebbles, to create contemporary
sculptures sufficiently lightweight for
wall hanging.
What are the rocks made from?
The main structure is polystyrene
and a whole range of materials are
then incorporated such as a mixture
of PVA, sand and polyfilla, which
form a hard, robust crust. I can create
a wide range of textures, which are
then hand painted.
How are the pebbles held in?
With invisible wooden dowels which
are glued into the pebble and base
rock, making them extremely secure.
When did this all start?
I have been working from my barn
studio in City, just outside
Cowbridge, for the last few years.
Have you always lived in the Vale?
I am originally from Cardiff, but came
to Cowbridge when I met my
partner, Sue Chatfield, who has
greatly inspired my work and
together we formed Offshore
Sculptures.
How much is an original?
Original paintings start at £1,500,
however, we are now producing
limited edition prints starting from
£80.
Who buys your work?
A variety of people really – from
architects, interior designers to
members of the public. People buy
them for the home, and we have sold
large pieces to hotels and corporate establishments. We exhibited
recently at the Index Show, Dubai
which is a massive global interior
design show in the World Trade
Centre there, and we were delighted
with the phenomenal response.
Do you do commissions?
Yes, I love a new challenge.
Do you do any other styles?
Yes I can do any style to meet
clients’ requirements. My latest
project is particularly exciting as I
have now created doors/units
suitable for kitchens and bathrooms,
based on the pebble and rock theme
– something we are hoping will suit
the marine industry.
You clearly love what you do!
Absolutely! What’s fascinating for me
is our Heritage Coastline as I find it
truly inspiring, and which I hope is
reflected in all aspects of my work
for people to appreciate.
