  RHOOSE
Teams merger

The summer of 2007 has seen the merger of Rhoose Rangers FC
with Rhoose FC to become one team playing under the banner of Rhoose FC.

The club was founded approximately five years ago and has now grown to such an extent that the merger was necessary, given that both clubs were operating independently of each other. This meant that players at junior level could not progress into the Senior Leagues and that the senior team did not have a stream of new players coming through.

The Executive Committee of both clubs have now approved the merger of the clubs which takes affect for the coming season and means that there now is one voice for football in Rhoose with everyone working together to help the Develop the Club, which is extremely ambitious. For example, Paul Giles (ex Cardiff City) was appointed Director of Coaching and Martyn Young, who is a respected goalkeeping coach, has also joined the club. Furthermore, the club have just held a Soccer School with a World Cup theme where 150 children attended a 3-day event during the School Holidays.

The two main issues affecting the club going forward are funding and facilities, which are probably relevant to most football clubs these days. It costs around £20,000 a year to run the club and this is met entirely by the generosity of local businesses and parents, without whom we could not operate. In respect of facilities, we have just two pitches available for all teams and this will mean that fixtures will be difficult to fulfil as the club continues to grow.

Eventually, Rhoose FC would like to own it’s own land to play on, and to build a Club House, which can become a focal point of the local community. At the moment, we are in the hands of the Vale of Glamorgan Council who have seen the development of areas such as Rhoose Point where a number of young families have moved to, which has helped to increase the demand for football in the local area.

If you would like to play for the club, or indeed would like to contribute as a volunteer or financially, then please do not hesitate to contact them.

LLANTWIT MAJOR
Fit for Summer

Sioban O’Sullivan, 42
Dental nurse, Calgary, Llantwit Major
Size: 12

When the Vale Hotel, Golf and Spa Resort were looking for a candidate to trial the Fit for Summer Campaign, Sioban jumped at the chance.

Having trained three to four times per week, Sioban was always very fit. However, due to work commitments and taxi-ing her twelve year old son to and from rugby and swimming sessions, this left her very little time to keep up her fitness regime.

Sioban will follow a six week training programme using the facilities at the Resort’s Health and Racquets Club, under the watchful supervision of Club manager Mandy Boulton.

Sioban said, “I need to do this trial not only for my physical, but also my emotional wellbeing. Luckily the hotel have plenty of activities to occupy my son while I work out.”

We’ll be visiting Sioban after her trial is complete to see how she gets on

NEWPORT
Monty opens his new course at Celtic Manor

Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie gave some revealing insights into his golf design philosophy as he officially opened his latest signature course at The Celtic Manor Resort on Tuesday, July 24.

The Montgomerie Course becomes the third championship layout at Celtic Manor following the recent launch of the new course built for staging The Ryder Cup in 2010. The impressive portfolio is completed by the Resort’s original Roman Road Course which has staged the last three Celtic Manor Wales Opens.

The Montgomerie has been built with the latest cutting edge technology but the designer has maintained true to his roots in Scottish links golf with many of its finishing touches. Deep pot bunkers have been added to give the course a links-like feel and the fairways have been shaped and cut in a traditional manner to offer a contrast to the snaking lines and diamond patterns of the fairways on the other two courses.

At July’s launch event for media, officials and dignitaries, Montgomerie gave an entertaining skills clinic while he explained the unique challenges of the new layout during a walking tour of several of its holes alongside Welsh rugby great Gareth Edwards. “My design will provide a different challenge to the other two courses at The Celtic Manor Resort,” said the eight-time European No 1.

Montgomerie has designed a number of highly acclaimed courses all over the world, from his native Scotland to Dubai and from Ireland to China, but this is his first project in England and Wales.

His design at Celtic Manor stretches to 6,371 yards and plays to a highly testing par of 69. With some spectacular tee shots and dramatic descents, the course provides a rewarding challenge for all standards of golfer.

The three very different courses which now await the golfer at Celtic Manor cement the Resort’s reputation as one of the leading golf destinations in Europe.

“I was delighted when I was invited to complete another championship course at Celtic Manor,” added Montgomerie, who won his thirty first title on The European Tour at this summer’s Smurfit Kappa European Open.

“It was fantastic to be given the opportunity to work with such a good piece of land which has helped me create some truly memorable golf holes with some stunning views.

The Resort already has two great golf courses and so many other fantastic facilities like the five-star hotel. That’s why we players enjoy coming to the Wales Open so much and I’m sure it is going to provide a tremendous venue for The Ryder Cup in 2010.”

Dylan Matthews, the Chief Executive of The Celtic Manor Resort, said: “We were thrilled when a player of Colin Montgomerie’s stature agreed to design the latest addition to the Resort’s golfing facilities.

It has been a real pleasure getting to know Colin over the years he has been playing in The Celtic Manor Wales Open. He’s a great guy, a brilliant golfer and now we know that he is also a fine course designer.

This breathtaking course will add to his growing reputation for course design and I’m sure all of our members and visitors are going to enjoy the challenge of playing it.

As the next European venue for The Ryder Cup, The Celtic Manor Resort is delighted to have the name Montgomerie – Europe’s outstanding player of recent times – on one of our three golf courses.”
