LLANTWIT MAJOR
Illtud’s 216
Dinner

We knew we were in for a treat when we visited Illtud’s 216 to sample their hospitality, as we’d already had the pleasure of meeting the new owners Georg and Einar Fuchs. Georg spoke so enthusiastically of their plans for the restaurant, that we had to try it for ourselves.

We were welcomed by Georg and Einar. It was early evening on one of those rare sunny days this summer and the light flooding through the windows gave the whole place a really nice glow. Steve, the head waiter, brought over our drinks and some homemade bread and left us to ponder the menu. We chatted with Steve throughout the evening and found him to be very knowledgeable and an altogether nice chap.

My partner chose cockle chowder with maize to start which was to die for. It was so full of cockles, it really did taste of the sea and seemed an appropriate dish given Llantwit’s location on the coast. I chose one of Georg’s grandmother’s dishes of pork pasta parcels with dill vinaigrette and sour cream, which complemented the pork perfectly. Georg did her proud!

For our main course, we opted for sea bass fillet on white beans cassolette and in my case the obligatory (I will be more adventurous in future I promise!) rib eye steak béarnaise and homemade chips. The sea bass was, again, so fresh and it just flaked on contact. The cassolette was seasoned well and the bacon gave it an extra level of flavour. My rib eye was perfectly cooked and the homemade béarnaise sauce was creamy and light. The homemade onion rings were an added bonus and nothing like the strips of inner tube that seem to be acceptable elsewhere.

As our puddings arrived, Georg came over for a chat. He commented that the apple studel with crème anglaise was a firm favourite with customers and that I should watch out for the red wine strawberries with green apple sherbet as they pack a punch. The strudel lived up to its reputation and what can I say about the strawberries other than WOW! My tastebuds were in overdrive. Having tried a couple of spoonfuls, my partner eyed them enviously as I drained the glass. Luckily Georg had offered to assist me to the door if I needed help. What a convivial host!

Illtud’s 216 is a real find. The food is incredibly good, the service is superb with an atmosphere to match. The portions are more than generous and the prices are very reasonable. Who can complain with starters ranging from £4.50 to £7, mains from £10 to £18 and those puddings from
£4.50 to £7.

What I will say, is that Illtud’s 216 has definitely raised the bar as far as eating out in the Vale is concerned. It will be one of our firm favourites!
