How did I get this far?
(previous positions held & professional experience) Started as a newspaper reporter in Exeter, then deputy editor on a small weekly paper in Mid Devon, before moving to Cardiff and the sub-editors' desk at the South Wales Echo, where I also covered ice hockey and motor sport. Next stop: corporate communications with British Gas in Cardiff and London, and then higher education communications at the universities in Newport, Cardiff and then Swansea, before setting up Weltch Media full-time in 2006.

What drives me?

Keen to do things well, and seek new challenges.

For just one day I'd like to walk in the shoes of...

A professional sportsman at the top of his game

My last supper would be

Probably something fishy, a lot of courses and a lot of wine, with the people who are closest to me.

Album that changed my life

Aja - Steely Dan

Books that influenced me the most

As a youngster, probably HG Wells short stories; more recently Haynes car maintenance manuals!

Early bird or night owl?
Twit twoo.

Most significant travel moment

Probably driving California's Highway 1 a few years ago with my teenage children, enjoying the scenery and sunshine and knowing it would probably be our last proper holiday together

Places I love
Jersey, Italy, California, Devon - and lots of Wales, of course.

My mentors
I was lucky enough to work with several very talented regional newspaper journalists.

When I'm not working I love.

Watching sport, old movies, and playing around with my funny little car, a Nissan Pao.

Five things to do before I pop my clogs
Visit New Zealand
Visit Canada (probably not on the same trip)
Play a proper round of golf without humiliating myself or injuring anyone else
Open the batting for England*
Write an Oscar-winning screenplay*
(* These last two are still on my list from age 14, but I have at least given up on the one involving Charlie's Angels)

Life-changing moment

The births of my children.

The cynic in me says

Nothing - because he knows he will get short shrift.

My bugbears are
People who claim their sales call is a "courtesy call" Middle-lane drivers Journalistic clichés (I try to avoid them like the plague) Bad grammar People spelling "Hear! Hear!" as "Here! Here!" (it makes no sense, but it's amazing how many people think it's right)

Creed I live by
Try to say 'yes' - most of our regrets are about things we didn't do, rather than things we did.

I'm best described as
An experienced professional who takes work seriously, but not himself.

Little known facts about me
I had my first motor racing reports published at age 15. I have written several books you've almost certainly never heard of. I competed in a cross-Europe rally for very old, very small cars in 2008 (the 700cc engine in our Berkeley blew to pieces in Slovenia - which was inconvenient). I used to be on close personal terms with Kim Wilde.

3 strengths

Reliable, professional, imaginative
