There are few examples where technology and tradition work so well hand in hand that they're a match made in heaven. Matthew Mullooly, owner of Northern Star Jewellers in Penarth is a fine example of this creative synergy. Vale Life gets...

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

Our fast world is in danger of losing age-old skills and craftsmanship in favour of technological advancement. It's scary stuff, yet when the two are in harmony, truly amazing and beautiful things can be created. In celebration of its first anniversary, we caught up with the wise man behind Northern Star Jewellers to find out how he has managed to unite his creative talents with the mechanical arts. Matthew is no rookie when it comes to craftsmanship and computers, so here's what he had to say.

Matthew, you are a year on - how does it feel?
I can't believe how time has flown! It was pretty nerve-racking opening my jewellery workshop, although word quickly spread and I've been inundated with commissions from Wales and all over the UK and I really can't ask better than that.

What's your secret?

I'm pretty down to earth, which is what's needed when working closely with clients who are excited, yet nervous about creating a bespoke piece of jewellery. In their head they have an idea of what they want, yet some find it hard to describe. I help turn those ideas into a reality to create something that is stunning and completely unique to them. My previous background in animation helps me to bring a concept literally to life.

How does that happen?

Clients may come in with a picture from a magazine or have sketched an outline design on paper, particularly in the case of engagement rings. I ask about their personal style, their lifestyle, the occasions where the jewellery might be worn and also help to match the size and scale of the piece to their frame and build. That way, we can create jewellery to suit every aspect of the client, right down to their personality. I may evolve those initial design thoughts onto paper first, before moving onto the technology bit.

Yes, tell us about that
In days gone by - a true craftsman would have made sketches on paper and then turned that into a piece of jewellery on the bench, using their tools and traditional skills of gem setting and gold or silver smithing. We still do the same, but the process in between uses computer aided design (CAD). This means that the client gets to see 3D design images of their jewellery and adjustments can be made to the design before the piece is finally cast into metal. It's perfect for people who normally just purchase jewellery off the shelf because they are not very good at visualising a design concept.

This sounds quite expensive
Anyone who wants an engagement or wedding ring for example, knows that a certain investment of funds will have to be made. The decision they need to make, is whether to buy something tangible they have seen in a shop window or to be totally involved in the design of their own individual piece. We cater for all budgets to help clients create something really outstanding.

You sound so passionate
I am. I love bringing together all my experience, training and skills to create a piece of jewellery that marries together gemstones with the perfect setting - and for someone who will treasure it forever.
