I don't know about you, but when it comes to fine jewellery, I'm a bit of a novice. I've always found fine jewellery a little bit too serious which is why I've received most of it as a gift rather than buying it myself. Don't get me wrong, it's lovely, but I know what I like - shiny precious metals, big gems and bold fine pieces that demand attention.

A CUT ABOVE

At David Edwards Jewellers in Cardiff's beautiful and historic Royal Arcade, Jack Cohen and Deborah Rawle are there to explain, inform and educate those of you who may be uncertain about choosing precious metals or gems. Their comprehensive knowledge is borne out of their combined fifty years' experience and the solid reputation on which David Edwards Jewellers have always successfully traded.

Visitors to the Royal Arcade will appreciate that its Victorian architecture lends itself to the traditional shop interior of David Edwards. Once inside, you're assured of friendly, unstuffy service and will feel at ease the minute you walk through the door. It's reassuring to know they have remained steadfast in their own style, in spite of the more contemporary class of jewellers. Don't be fooled though, as you can be sure of truly exquisite pieces that combine contemporary designs with traditional craftsmanship.

Fashion trends of late, have seen women shy away from gold in preference of colourful, readily available costume jewellery. This has been, in part, due to TV style programmes and of course the economic downturn which has changed the mindset towards investment jewellery. However, any style conscious person will know that trends come and go, so it was only a matter of time before jewellery, in the true sense of the word made a huge comeback. That time is now!

Jewellery is back with a vengeance this Autumn; and not the cheerful 'mix and match with every outfit' type, but rocks, gems and classic timeless pieces. Faking it til you make it, is fine to a limit, but nothing feels as good as wearing the real thing - it's like adorning yourself with cashmere - you never want to take it off.

Is David Edwards Jewellers the type of place you can browse without feeling awkward or obliged to buy? The answer is a resounding 'yes'. Jack and Deborah realise that some people are nervous about buying gems and gold, either due to a lack of knowledge or because of a heftier price tag than fashion jewellery.

Cautious readers take note; you may want to find out whether any old or unworn pieces of jewellery lurking in your drawers can be sold or remodelled. This way you could invest in something new or have an existing piece redesigned to make it look more contemporary.

If you hanker after something with a sense of history then ask to see some of the beautiful second hand and vintage pieces on offer there. Then decide on a budget and your style preference. Perhaps classic, dainty bracelets and diamond stud earrings are the mainstay of your jewellery collection; or maybe bold rocks and stones are a passion of yours.

Whatever your style, the team at David Edwards will be happy to talk through your options and help you find some stunning signature pieces.

Preaching to the converted is fruitless, as they will already appreciate the importance of skilled craftsmen, valuations and quality graded gems and precious metals. They make wise choices and recognise the significance and sentiment of passing heirloom pieces through the family.

Gold and silver is in resurgence, in both fashion and investment terms. Beautifully jewellery always stands the test of time and, if like me, you think that fine jewellery is all a bit too serious, think again. Today's trend is for striking, fun pieces that make it more accessible and appealing than ever before.

For anyone in doubt that diamonds really are a girl's best friend - Jack and Deborah trawl the globe to seek out unique designs and diamonds of the highest quality and grading to add to their large collection of precious gems and pearls.

Whether you are looking for bracelets, a necklace, earrings or rings, there is something there to suit all tastes and budgets. The trick is to buy something that suits you, your personality and of course your pocket; then wear it and love it.
