If individuality is your style and you refuse to follow the pack, then Arbuthnot Opticians in Barry is the place to go to celebrate your uniqueness, with its bespoke couture range of Tom Davies eyewear. Vale Life talks to Suzanne Cox, practice manager.
DESIGNER SPEC
I first heard about Tom Davies from a style and image associate of mine, who, while batting her eyelashes from a pair of funky purple frames, extolled the virtues of Tom's exclusive eyewear designs. Her specs suited her edgy style and vivacious personality perfectly.
Green with envy I contemplated having a pair made for myself with plain glass, just for the thrill of sporting a one-off creation. Be careful what you wish for though, as, three years on, I find myself in need of prescription lenses. It's bad enough bumping into someone wearing the same outfit as you - these days you're more likely to find someone wearing identical glasses. So, for the uninitiated, let's explain how Arbuthnot Opticians can help you to blaze a trail and create a statement with your very own pair of bespoke specs.
How did you get involved in offering the bespoke range?
The Tom Davies philosophy is to supply his couture and ready-to-wear collection in conjunction with optometry specialists, through a worldwide network of quality and boutique opticians. We fitted the bill.
So, what does it involve?
Customers have a consultation with us, which many have said is an experience in itself. They are guided through the consultation, during which they choose a style of frame from the Tom Davies ready-to-wear collection. We then take measurements around the eyes, face and head and these are sent to Tom's design team who will prepare your made-to-measure frame in the workshop. We take into consideration everything about the customer, including the size of frame in proportion to their face, the way it sits on their face, right down to the materials, details and trim. Also, in order to create the right impact we can help the customer choose the most flattering colour of frame based on their skin tone and hair colour.
Wow, it sounds like a complete style session
It is really. These days, customers want something different and apart from the practical reasons of having to see clearly, they want their eyewear to be more than just an accessory. They need to know that their glasses will be noticed for the right reasons and complement their look and the clothes they wear. They are making an investment into the health of their eyes and also want to look good.
Describe the look
The frames are fashion led pieces for men and women, which is why they have such worldwide reputation and celebrity appeal. It's their uniqueness and exclusivity that makes them so covetable.
Some of the designs are quite classic and others more innovative and zany. Whatever a customer chooses, the main objective is to make sure they reflect their facial features and characteristics, as no two faces are the same. The frames are available in materials such as titanium, horn and bloc acetate and each piece is hand crafted for a comfortable fit, without compromising on the style element.

How long does it take before getting the finished product?
Between three to four weeks.
We guess it has a hefty price tag?
Bespoke frames start at a surprisingly reasonable £260. We want to offer our customers the best we can in optometry services and a variety of designs, styles and prices. Very few places in South Wales offer the Tom Davies collection, which is why we brought it to Barry for our local customers. What's more, customers travel from further afield because they want unique service from us. If bespoke is a step too far, fear not, as Arbuthnot stocks the less pricey Tom Davies ready-to-wear collection. Arbuthnot's highly skilled staff and state of the art technology provide a total eye care service. Nowadays, there is so much choice, but they have narrowed down your search by offering designer frames and sunglasses from Prada, Versace, Diro, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Ray Ban and Oakley, to name a few.
Autumn is a perfect time to ring the changes, so if you fancy a new style or, like me, just want to look sassy and intelligent, a trip to Arbuthnot is a must.
