PORTHCAWL
St. John’s School makes the grade

All we can hope is to give our
children the best start in life.
We give them what we can, when
we can and based on the
information we have at that time.
Yet we can never guarantee how
outside influences will affect them.
St. John's Independent School in Porthcawl offers an educational environment in which its pupils can thrive. Recently they announced that 42% of their GCSE results were at Grades A* or A, compared to the national average of 22%. They have demonstrated that not only do able pupils achieve high grades but also children who have worked extra hard to overcome difficulties have succeeded due to the supportive learning environment of the school.
I was fortunate enough to be educated privately and studied with pupils from all over the world, all walks of life and financial backgrounds. We were encouraged and empowered to nurture our talents and to play to our strengths. The longer in the tooth I get, the more I thank my parents for the chances and choices they gave me. I learned to stand on my own two feet, to communicate with people at all levels, in many circumstances, and to make informed decisions.
Similarly, St. John's recognises each pupil's ability and allows their creative spirit to come to the fore, so that one day they will shine as adults. Some may pursue academic or creative subjects leading them to university or a chosen career path, while others excel in sports.
Whatever the outcome, a child who is schooled privately, will take away more than a string of qualifications. Attributes such as confidence or gaining a broad perspective on life are immeasurable and less tangible but no less important.
One thing is for sure, parents don't have all the answers and a child's total experience of the world will be based on the support of other people. At St. John's the teachers and staff aim to fill the gaps. What more can you ask?
