FIRST AMONG EQUALS

We were the first Life magazine to put inspirational quotations on our magazine's spine.

We thought it would be a nice idea and you, our readers, tell us it is and that you like it. Here's some of the recent ones.

Got a suggestion?
We'd love to hear it. We try to make them suitable for the season. So make Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter your inspiriation.

Priceless
We were also first in South Wales to call our magazines Priceless instead of Free but that's been copied too - is nothing sacred? Having said that, that are no new ideas, just old ones with a twist - we tip our hats to all those who have published before us. We salute you.

VOCATION IS THE SPINE OF LIFE

"Vocation is the spine of life." Friedrich Nietzsche said that. He also said, "I cannot believe in a God who wants to be praised all the time." And, one of my personal favourites, "I'm not upset that you lied to me, I'm upset that from now on I can't believe you."

Yes, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (October 15, 1844 to August 25, 1900) was a 19th-century German philosopher ahead of his time. He wrote about religion, morality, contemporary culture, philosophy and science, displaying a fondness for metaphor, irony and aphorism. Nietzsche's career began as a classical philologist before turning to philosophy.

At twenty four he was appointed to the Chair of Classical Philology at the University of Basel (the youngest individual to have ever held this position), but resigned in 1879 due to health problems that plagued the poor chap for most of his life. In 1889 he became mentally ill, possibly due to atypical general paralysis attributed to tertiary syphilis (nasty). He lived his remaining years in the care of his mother until her death in 1897 - then in the care of his sister until his own death in 1900.

At this point it might be appropriate to let Joseph Stalin round things off. He infamously once said, "A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic." Happy days Joseph, happy days.

Here are the quotations...

Summer 2010

Swedish Proverb

Spring 2010
Spring is when life's alive in everything
Christina Rossetti

Autumn/Winter 2009
Fashion can be bought. Style one must possess
Edna Woolman Chase

Summer 2009
A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken
James Dent

Spring 2009
If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant:
if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would
not be so welcome
Anne Bradstreet

Oh and Bono once said, "The God I believe in isn't short of cash mister." Sounds a little like something Nietzsche might have said but then Bono always fancied himself as a philosopher. I suppose he fancies himself as lots of things but then you can when you're a rock star and you pay very little tax. Ah, the luck of the Irish.
