I find that a sure fire way of knowing that Christmas is on the horizon is when
our local deli’s are full of fabulous festive goodies.

DELICIOUS DELI’S

I love Christmas. I love the lights, the trimmings, I love the fact that I can spend time with the family and for two weeks of the year, I try to turn my phone off. It never works mind you!

The other thing I love about Christmas is visiting my local delicatessen. I like to get a selection of cold meats because someone's always stopping by and it's nice to be able to rustle up a tasty sandwich which doesn't involve turkey. Not forgetting those yummy mince pies to go with a nice glass of sherry or cup of tea.

The other thing I like about a real delicatessen is that it brings good old fashioned charm to any high street.

It's a place where you're likely to meet a neighbour or bump into a friend you haven't seen for a while. It's a much more relaxed shopping experience and you can usually find something unusual to add to your basket.

In this issue Vale Life features some of the very best delicatessens from across the Vale of Glamorgan and we find out what mouth-watering treats they have in store for us for the coming festive season.

Knife and Fork Catering

So you've written the guest list, chosen the venue, told everyone about it - even planned the music, drink and dress code. It's an occasion worthy of a celebration and you'll get the chance to chat and mingle with your friends and family. But what's a gathering without anything to eat.

Food brings people together, whether it's a few nibbles or a hearty meal, and maybe you don't have the time to cook, or the venue of choice doesn't offer food. Whatever your predicament, you can rely on Knife and Fork Catering to provide you with the solution, whether it's a tempting array of canapés, Italian antipasti, a cheese and wine evening or a banquet fit for a wedding. You name the occasion and let them work their magic - the choice is limitless. Popular options are honey-glazed tenderloin of pork with sweet apple sauce, oaksmoked salmon with caper and dill dressing, or herb-crusted goat's cheese with roast tomato vinaigrette followed by a bitter chocolate and almond tart. Or maybe you have something equally as appealing in mind?

Maybe you'd prefer the informality of a hot and cold buffet or a formal sit-down menu. You might be trying to impress business clients, reward your staff, celebrate the christening of your child or have a big bash for a milestone birthday - it might even be a romantic evening in with your loved one to mark St. Valentine's Day. Whatever the occasion, you can guarantee Knife and Fork will be there every step of the way to help you with your theme, special dietary requirements and to work within your budget.

Let them do what they do best and take the hard work out of entertaining - all you need to do is to get ready, be there to greet your guests and enjoy!

Food For Thought

This family run deli is well loved by regular customers, and for good reason. Owner Dave Keeble, wife Linda, son Nathan and daughter-inlaw Sarah pride themselves on ensuring visitors have a wonderful array of gifts and produce to choose from.

Food for Thought has a reputation for fabulous lunchtime baguettes (my favourite is chicken tikka), homemade pasties and home-made coleslaw. Plus a superb range of cakes. They're already taking orders for Christmas so, as they say, book early to avoid disappointment. and the mince pies, you have to try the mince pies - scrummy!

Food for Thought is well-known at this time of year for their beautiful German advent calendars and confectionery, Dave's gorgeous cooked hams and, again, don't forget those mince pies! You'll really like the friendly festive service - always smiling and nothing is too much trouble.

They're open from 7am, six days a week and they do all the things a good deli should - extremely well.
