NEWPORT
The Crown at Celtic Manor

If you only do one thing this season, then treat yourself and your loved one to an overnight’s stay at the Celtic Manor Resort.

My husband and I managed a sneaky break at this five star resort recently and as soon as we arrived and were shown to our beautifully appointed, spotlessly clean double room, the stresses of the day (and previous few months!) began to ebb away.

I must admit I do enjoy little touches of style and that’s just what you get at the Celtic Manor. Fluffy white robes and slippers, a bowl of fresh fruit and even a freshly made doughnut with pouring cream, set us up nicely in readiness for our evening meal at the hotel’s three AA rosette restaurant, recently awarded for its culinary excellence.

Part of unwinding for us is being able to lounge around and read magazines which we did until dinner. Having eaten at the Michelin starred Crown at Whitebrook, we were already of the culinary skills of executive chef James Sommerin, and were equally impressed with head chef Tim McDougall’s delivery at the resort. Who wouldn’t be with foie gras poached in port, fig wafer and wine reduction to start, roast monkfish loin with cheek poached in red wine, wild mushrooms and gratin potato for mains and bitter chocolate mousse, basil sorbet and orange for dessert. Each course was interspersed with delicious appetizers.

Needless to say, for a restaurant of this caliber, the mood of the room was just right and the service was impeccable. We took the time to ask other diners over a drink what they thought of the experience. A couple who dine out once a month said “superb”, a table of four “we came for an anniversary and we were really made a fuss of. We can’t wait for another birthday!” and a table of six said “We’re from a dining club and our experience this evening has been unforgettable. We must try The Crown at Whitebrook”.

When my husband and I are next in need of another stress reliever and pampering evening, The Celtic Manor will be on our list.
