Mark Roberts is an artist, entrepreneur, drummer, designer and publisher but when he's not doing that, you'll find him on one of the Vale's beautiful beaches.
THE LAST WORD
What do you do?
I do lots of things. I am a designer, photographer, writer, illustrator and artist but I'm first and foremost a husband and a father and I do them all with varying degrees of competence. I suppose the thing that sums me up the most is that I'm a serial entrepreneur. I've had a reasonably succesful career but this year, aside from the work I do that pays the bills, I'm returning to my first love which is art, so I'm currently talking to a few galleries about putting on some exhibitions and also developing the work that I'm doing into different areas, for example, three dimensional pieces and digital installations.
What do you like about the Vale?
I love the Heritage Coast. I live five minutes from the sea so whenever I want to walk on the beach I can. In the Summer, we take a portable barbecue, build a fire and spend a few pleasant hours chilling. My son Jack loves this time with us and we take our dog Lucy, and she loves it too! Outside of that, I like Cowbridge on market day, Penarth because of the Esplanade and Pier, Llantwit Major for its history and beach and Barry for its beaches in the winter months.
What is your favourite meal?
Home cooked chicken dinner, made by my wife. She makes great granny gravy!
Favourite place in the Vale?
Apart from home which is my sanctuary, anywhere with friends. I've met a lot of new friends recently and there's nothing nicer than going out for a meal and putting the world to rights. Also, I train at Penarth Amateur Boxing Club and I'm never happier than when I'm training or sparring with Neil Munn. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd train there every day.
Best event in the Vale?
Half Life 2 Deathmatch (online gaming) on a Friday night with my eleven year old. Other than that, I really like the Vale of Glamorgan Show. It's the one event of the year that I think showcases what the Vale is all about. Also Cowbridge Food Festival and the St David's Polo at Fonmon. One is dominated by food, the other appears to be dominated by alcohol but they're both enjoyable days out.
What's missing from the Vale?
Sadly, manners. I can't stand rude people and I think if we are to attract tourists into the area, we need to do more to make them feel welcome and it wouldn't be a bad thing if we treated each other a little nicer here as well.
What do you do to relax?
I've always played the drums so I have an electronic kit which drives my wife insane. However, it keeps me sane.
Do you have a pet hate?
Bad manners and dog poo.
Favourite music?
I honestly love anything and everything from classical to pop. If it's good, I'll listen to it. I was in Seren Boutique, Cardiff with my wife recently and owner Linda had a French female singer playing, which was really chilled, so I couldn't wait to get back home and look her up on Spotify.
Favourite holiday destination?
I love Mallorca and Portugal. The people are really friendly and I love the Mediterranean food and lifestyle. In this country, Cornwall, west Wales and we occasionally blow the bank and spend a long weekend in London.
Sum yourself up in three words...
Off the wall.
I'm very good at.
Motorcycling. I like road riding and off road riding. At twenty years of age, I was the youngest advanced motorcycle instructor in the UK which I'm very proud of. My dad was a police motorcyclist, so I think his influence rubbed off a little.
I'm very bad at.
The domestic stuff. I'm a bloke. I know it's there, but I just don't see it or there're a 100 things that distract me.
In a nutshell, my philosophy is .
Assume we're only here once, and that way you won't waste any of it.
