There's much more to Cowbridge than the High Street. There are a further mix of shops, businesses, a restaurant and cafés in Penny Lane and Willow Walk which run alongside the River Thaw between the High Street, Town Hall Square and the main car park.
PENNY LANE COWBRIDGE
Old Masons Yard is a development
of shops, offices, restaurant and
cafés occupying a prominent and pleasant position alongside the River Thaw. Penny Lane, on the east side, provides a safe and attractive pedestrian route to the High Street from the main (free) car park.
Willow Walk is on the other side of the river and is connected to Penny Lane by a unique footbridge. Old Masons Yard has eleven shops with offices above, and a café and a restaurant.
Originally built in the 1970's, further development was undertaken in 2004 to replace the old footbridge with a fantastic new one incorporating the café and providing fully ramped access for the disabled and pushchairs to cross the river. Approaching the footbridge from the car park you will immediately be drawn to the busy café and Gelateria. You can sit on the bridge, or beside the river and watch the wonderful wildlife, the ducks being a particular favourite - they must be the best fed ducks in the Vale! River trout can be clearly seen, as this part of the river is their nursery.
Wander around the selection of shops where you can buy clothes, gifts, fruit and veg, a picture from the gallery or order a fabulous new kitchen.You may want to book a table at the Chinese restaurant with its balcony overlooking the river, or have a traditional afternoon tea in The Linen Cupboard. New to Penny Lane is a shoe repairer which also cuts keys and engraves. Opening in April will be La Mercerie, a knitting wools and haberdashery shop.

Owners Theda Williams and Olwen Anderson have run this popular shop for seven years and you'll find that you're spoiled for choice. Regular customer Mrs Dorothy Davies says that she often visits the shop as it has an excellent choice and the service is second to none.

Diz Miles, owner of Carousel, has
something very special to offer.
Ladies come from near and far to
see what previously owned
garments, bags, hats, belts, gloves
and pre owned and new jewellery
is on offer in her dress agency.
Diz, quite rightly, is very choosy on the
items that she offers for sale. She says
that she has a duty to her sellers and
her buyers to only offer items that have
been professionally dry cleaned, in
excellent condition and that are up to

Strawberry Fields
Fruit and veg shop Strawberry
Fields has been serving the local
community for the past six years
and it does it extremely well.
Father and son Paul and Joel Preece
opened the business six years ago and
its thrived ever since. It stocks what
you would expect but it also does a
roaring trade on cut flowers and plants.
It also sells bird food and has been
known to stock exotic fruits when in
season, such as passion and dragon
fruit. Made to order fruit baskets are
popular and the shop supplies fruit and
veg to local restaurants and businesses.

Shoecare
This fantastic little shop opened
just before Christmas and offers all
of the things you would expect
from a Shoecare shop, and more.
They repair shoes, cut keys, sell
trophies and engrave a large range
of goods. In addition they also sell a
wonderful selection of bags, purses,
umbrellas and Zippo lighters. We met
Craig Lamont - Shop Manager, who
trained in their Bridgend branch and
is a very affable young man who is a
true credit to the company. Obviously
customer care is high on the agenda
for this shop and is sure to do well.

We've been a huge fan of The Linen Cupboard since Vale Life first hit the presses. Owner Melanie James makes you feel so welcome as soon as you walk in, as does Stella, the Linen Cupboard's mascot.
