BARRY
Arbuthnots Eye Know Eye Care

At the beginning of the year Suzanne Cox from Arbuthnot Opticians in Barry's Broad Street visited High Street Primary School to present a very informative session to two classes of young children about the importance of healthy eye sight.

The children were given a lot of information about how eyes can be affected by different conditions and tried on glasses designed to show the type of sight problems people can encounter. The children were also given a lot of good guidance about how to maintain good healthy eyes with suggestions about the best types of food to eat.

Most of the children thought that carrots were best for their eyes and not green vegetable foods like broccoli! Once they were back in class the children researched where the expression 'carrots are good for your eyes' came from and found that the expression originated from World War Two - this linked nicely to their history topic.

Suzanne of Arbuthnots said "It is important to teach children about looking after their sight, as it is the one sense we take for granted. Good eye sight is crucial for a child's development and is important so that they learn at school and interact with other people.

The Eye Know Eye Care Scheme which we're hoping to roll out through all schools in the Vale of Glamorgan, teaches children the importance of communicating sight difficulties with parents and teachers, the importance of taking breaks from activities which require concentration, the importance of a healthy diet for sight development and regular check-ups. Every child under the age of 16 is entitled to a free NHS sight test every year. If this is done annually, it is more likely that the child will continue visiting their optician in their adult life which is essential to pick up early signs of eye disease and possibly other health problems as well."
