The GP’s and staff welcome patients to their new purpose
built surgery.

The GP’s have invested their own money into this project, which forms part of the overall Local Health Board Strategy to improve premises within the Vale of Glamorgan and has been developed in conjunction with the Welsh Assembly Government. The new premises replace the old converted residential premises on Holton Road with modern purpose-built accommodation enabling treatment in state-of-the-art facilities with scope for future development of clinical services.

The premises offer a friendly environment to accommodate future expansion of the practice. It has ample parking and disabled access. A connected pharmacy will be located next to the building within the coming months.

Dr J R Chapman said, “We welcome patients old and new and we will continue to improve and extend the quality of service we provide.”

Gentle laser treatment; a dream come true for dentistry.

In recent years there have been great advances in dental technology to ensure more comfortable and predictable treatment for people with specific dental problems. The diode laser takes this progression in patient comfort to the next level. Lasers, basically a beam of light, can be used with millimetre precision and compared with other treatments there are no known side effects. This gives people the option of virtually painless dental treatment. There are many applications for this, but the main areas are:

Peridontal Disease
Periodontitis is chronic inflammation of the gums and is now one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults over 40 years of age. Periodontal treatment aims to remove bacteria in the gingival pockets. Laser therapy provides greater reduction in bacteria than conventional treatment. The main advantages are that treatment is virtually painless and there is a shorter working time with no bleeding after treatment. The return to normal lifestyle is immediate.

Smile Design
When we undertake a smile design (as seen on extreme makeover programmes) the shape and height of the gums are an extremely important aspect in the success of the final appearance. Some people have a ‘gummy smile’or there differences in the lengths of the teeth. Sometimes this aspect of the design neglected because painful surgery has to be undertaken. This reshaping can generally be achieved with the laser without having to resort to surgery.

Root Filling
Laser treatment destroys bacteria in the root canal and surrounding dentine this leads to greater long term success.
