Farthings At Home
31 HIGH ST, COWBRIDGE
O1446 773545
Farthings describes itself as ‘The
Exquisite Taste Of Cowbridge’ and
we wouldn’t disagree.
It’s so very
‘Cowbridge’ and as the baby sister
to the very successful Farthings
restaurant it performs its role
beautifully. Gorgeous quiches and
lunchtime salads have an adoring
fanbase and if you happen to work
within walking distance, chances are
this establishment will take some
responsibility for wrecking a few
diets and making some a success,
depending on what you choose from
the counter.

YOU LOVED...
Excellent service, home made quiche
and superb cheeses.

Food for Thought
12 HIGH STREET, BARRY
01446 735711
This family run deli is well loved by
it’s regulars and one visit will confirm
why.
David Keeble, the owner, brought
the idea back from America 24 years
ago. In case you’re wondering, Dave
had a catering company called Toad
In The Hole which used to look after
the catering for Queen, Eric Clapton
and Bruce Springsteen (to name a
few) while they were on tour.
Wife Linda, son Nathan and daughterin-
law Sarah all work in the business.
It’s open from 7am, six days a week
and does all the things
a good deli
should - extremely well.

YOU LOVED...
Friendly service, lunchtime baguettes
and home cooked hams and meats.

Thyme Out
5 ELM GROVE RD, DINAS POWYS
029 2051 2200
If there’s a reason to visit Dinas
Powys, this has to one of the best.
Thyme Out is one of those places you
stumble on and from then on go out
of your way to visit. If you drop in
between 12.30pm and 2pm, prepare
for a little wait. Great salad bowls and
baguettes mean that this is a popular
haunt for the lunch brigade.
They also do some speciality homemade
cakes which have taken their
toll on my waistline since I
discovered them.

YOU LOVED...
Very friendly staff, baguettes,
hampers and cheesecake.

Foxy’s
VICTORIA ROAD, PENARTH
029 2025 1666
Opened by Sian and Neil Fox in
January 2002, Foxy’s has gone from
strength to strength.
They had always
wanted to open a deli and appear to
be living the dream. It’s clear, talking
to the owners, that they have a real
passion for food. They attribute their
success to listening to customers and
being flexible. “It’s hard work, but we
love it, ” says Sian. In 2006, it was
voted Best Deli in Wales by readers of
The Observer.
YOU LOVED...
Great coffee, superb salad lunches
and delicious pastries.

YOU LOVED...
Nothing seems too much trouble and they’ll cut your meat to your liking.
Cheese Specialist
HOWARD BURROWS
WAITROSE
Howard Burrows, 52, is a Waitrose cheese specialist, having successfully completed a specialist course in 2006.
Howard has worked for Waitrose for 3 years. Before that he worked for Safeway for 29 years on the deli counter, and has in-depth knowledge. He feels his specialist knowledge helps customers with their cheese selection and he is also able to impart his knowledge to other partners (as Waitrose staff are called).
If you’re planning a party and need advice with your cheeseboard, Howard is happy to help. His suggestion for a good cheeseboard would include three cheeses, one hard, one soft and a brie.
If you’re looking for a wine to accompany your cheese, Howard suggests that you stick to the same region as the flavours are more likely to complement each other.
HOWARD’S TOP TIP
Leave the cheese at room temperature for half an hour to get the fuller flavour and don’t, whatever you do, put butter on your biscuits!
