Dr Mary Murray

Mary graduated from Cardiff University in 1988. Following this she took up posts as junior and senior house officer Periodontology, Restorative dentistry and Oromaxillofacial surgery. She then embarked on her career in General Dental Practice.

Mary has a special interest in cosmetic dentistry, creating beautiful smiles with crowns and veneers.

Mary also offers Invisalign treatment, a nearly invisible way to straighten teeth using clear removable aligners.

Dr Peter Murray

Peter was one of the founder dentists at Mermaid Quay and until his third child was born was UK Clinical Director for the James Hull Company. He is now lead clinician and has a special interest in veneers, Invisalign and placing dental implants. Peter is also qualified to provide intravenous sedation for patients of a nervous disposition.

Attaining a good work/life balance is hard enough for any couple, but when you work together in one of Cardiff’s most popular dental practices and then add three young children into the equation, this creates an even greater challenge.

THE JOURNEY

Not so for husband and wife team Peter and Mary Murray who work at James Hull in Cardiff Bay. They invited us into their lovely home in the Vale of Glamorgan to tell us about their life and work.

How did you meet?
PETER We met at dental school in 1986.
MARY Yes, it was at one of the school’s boozy night’s out. Pete paid for my taxi ride home!

At what point did you realise you wanted to be together?
MARY We gelled straight away and went on to support each other through dental finals. We then decided a few years later to take a year off and travel the world.

What are the qualities you admire most in each other?
MARY Pete is so easy going. He has a laid back attitude and is always optimistic.
PETER Mary is very methodical and level headed. There’s a good balance to our relationship which works really well – a good yin and yang!

How did you end up working together?
PETER We have both worked for the James Hull Dental Group for over 16 years but have worked in the same practice since returning to work after our third child.

Are you competitive with each other at all?
MARY Only on the golf course!

Tell us, how do you juggle the work/life balance?
PETER We’re lucky in that we both have great organisational skills. There’s lots of forward planning involved and we both take an active part in child care.
MARY We both have the same stresses with work and child care, so this helps as we can work together on things.

What do you do to relax?
PETER Golf. We also have a large network of family and friends and we love to get together as often as possible.
MARY Golf. Dinner. Meeting friends. We also enjoy gardening and have an allotment.

Where do you see yourselves in ten years’ time?
PETER Bringing up our three children and getting that balance right between work and personal life.

What’s your philosophy on life?

PETER Try anything – give anything a go!! If you fancy bungee jumping, then why not?
MARY Have a cool, calm measured approach.

What are your roles within the James Hull Group?
PETE I work with all specialists within the group.
MARY I take referrals from outside and inside the Group. I’m also the only female dentist at both the Bay and Parade practices.
