ARE FOREVER DIAMONDS We talk to diamond specialist Roger Williams of The Jewellery Studio about the rarest, most brilliant and certainly the most desirable of all gems. Where do you live?
Penarth, which is also known as Pontcanna by the sea. If you look at the architecture of the buildings in Penarth, they are very similar to those in Pontcanna where I have my studio.
How long have you been trading?
I opened the Jewellery Studio twenty five years ago to provide the trade and the general public a place to visit to discuss commissions and to have jewellery repaired.
Since those early days the business has gone from strength to strength. We have a very loyal customer base with many customers travelling from different parts of the country to seek diamond advice and to commission jewellery.
You have a reputation as one of the area’s finest jewellery designers and diamond experts. Can you explain why?
I believe I offer excellent diamond advice based on my knowledge gained over many years. I am as enthusiastic now in my appreciation of this wonderful gemstone as I ever was.
I also have a diamond partner in Antwerp who sources top quality diamonds at affordable prices. The designs that I use follow the recent fashion trends and as we all know, platinum remains the top of every woman's shopping list.
Is it mainly diamond jewellery that you offer?
We also offer coloured gem stones and silver jewellery. We showcase new designs and the range is constantly changing and expanding. We stock designers from Italy, Germany, Greece, Poland, Mexico and Cyprus.
You also sell watches, which is your most popular range?
Without a doubt it’s the Follie Follie range for women and men. These can’t be found on the high street and are really striking.
What other services do you offer?
We have always been recognised for the quality of our jewellery repairs and I am always prepared to discuss redesigning pieces of jewellery to the customers’ requirements.
What's news in the world of diamonds?
It was interesting to read that Eira Thomas, daughter of Welsh geologist Grenville Thomas is making her name as Canada's most glamorous miner and has recently discovered a diamond source that she is hoping rivals the very famous Diavik Mine that her father found in the northwest territories which put Canada firmly on the map as a world diamond supplier.
It’s been reported that diamonds will soon be in short supply, please tell us this isn’t so!
What is reported in the diamond press is that the supply of diamonds is beginning to shrink as the likes of China are buying more and more. We are also told that there will be real shortages especially with larger size diamonds, even this Christmas it is becoming increasingly difficult to source them.
So now’s the time to buy then?
Absolutely, for that reason and particularly at this time, because the prices are set against the US dollar and, as everyone knows, it is very weak against sterling at the moment.
Please tell us about the new cut of diamond that’s been created
Years go by without new diamond shapes emerging in the retail market and the new diamond we are proud to have here is the Inferno Cut Diamond. We are the only jewellers to offer this diamond in south Wales and it has taken three years from design to manufacturing stage. The stone is cut as a square or rectangle with twenty percent more reflective area than the classic brilliant cut diamond. Its 81 facets give up to a forty per cent increase in sparkle!
The Inferno Cut Diamond has generated a huge interest in the studio and gives a brighter and prettier alternative to cuts such as the Princess
or Emerald. It’s the stone to have and be seen wearing!
